Specialized Treatment and Rehabilitation Services(STARS)

1990 Winner

Merced County, CA
Human Services

Pre adolescent boys reported to have been molested and their families receive mental health treatment, social services, and legal aid from this program. The program is both a primary and secondary prevention effort: staff work to break the cycle of violence through mental health treatment, and to stop abuse before it happens through community education. Boys are grouped by age for mental health treatment. Parents help plan treatment and participate in multi family activities. A community education program focusing on male molestation has reached an estimated 29,000 people. Nearly 250 doctors, nurses, educators, social workers, and police officers have attended six seminars offered by the program.
